News In Brief

UAE non-oil growth to edge up to 3% this year, central bank says

Dubai: The non-oil part of the United Arab Emirates economy is expected to grow 3 percent this year, accelerating from 2.7 percent last year, the central bank said on Wednesday. “The recent improvement in oil prices has shed a positive sentiment on the economic activity in the non-oil sector and boosted economic confidence,” the bank said in a third-quarter review published on Wednesday.

However, overall gross domestic product is projected to grow only 1.6 percent in 2017, down from 3.0 percent in 2016, because of a shrinking oil sector as the UAE cut output under a global deal among oil producers.

    TRAI's in-flight connectivity norms by year-end

New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will come out with its much-awaited recommendations for in-flight connectivity by December-end.

"Recommendations on in-flight connectivity to come out by year end or next 15 days," TRAI Chairman R.S. Sharma told reporters here on Wednesday on the sidelines of an event organised by Broadband India Forum.  Declining to reveal any further details, Sharma said: "In-flight connectivity will be allowed, recommendations will set the broad parameters for that."

Sri Lanka win toss, elect to bowl against India in 2nd ODI

Mohali: Sri Lanka skipper Thisara Perera won the toss and elected to bowl against India in the second ODI of the three-match series here today.

For India, Tamil Nadu offspin-bowling allrounder Washington Sundar received his maiden ODI cap. He replaced Kuldeep Yadav in the playing XI. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, fielded an unchanged side.

S&P futures extend losses as Democrat tipped to win Alabama race

Tokyo: US S&P futures extended earlier losses on Wednesday, as Democrat Doug Jones took a slight lead over Republican Roy Moore with about 86 percent of the vote counted in a bitter U.S. Senate race in Alabama. S&P emini futures were down 0.3 percent, compared to their drop 0.1 percent before the Alabama polls closed.

A Jones victory could mean trouble for President Donald Trump and his populist political base. It would narrow the Republicans’ already slim majority in the U.S. Senate, possibly making it harder for Trump to advance his policy agenda.

Japan to keep record-low interest rates in FY18 budget draft: Sources

Tokyo: Japan’s government is set to keep an assumed interest rate at a record low of 1.1 percent as it compiles the budget for the next fiscal year starting in April, which will keep its borrowing costs low, government sources told Reuters on Wednesday.

Bonds fall after Nov inflation spurs rate-hike talk

Mumbai: India’s benchmark 10-year bond fell to its lowest level in more than 16 months on Wednesday, while shares weakened after unexpectedly high November consumer inflation created the prospect the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) could raise interest rates sooner than expected.

The benchmark 10-year bond yield was up 3 basis points at 7.22 percent by 0443 GMT after rising to as high as 7.25 percent, the highest since July 2016.
