September 16: NPA worries are overdone since a large amount of the banking strain has already been priced in, says Aditya Puri of HDFC Bank. “The real culprit of NPAs is restructuring, with a majority of restructuring needed due to project delays,” he says, adding that 15-20% of this is likely to turn into NPAs. However, with capital adequacy ratios above that mandated by Basel III rules, Indian banks are well capitalized and the sector has no major risks.
